If you want to have a meal that satiates your tummy, tickles your taste buds and stays in your memory for a long time, than let me tell you you need to try Punjabi food and whats better than trying chawlas2. The square in its name represents catering mouth-watering vegetarian as well as non vegetarian dishes. Distinctively Punjabi cuisine is known for its rich, buttery flavors along with the extensive variety.
I had a privilege to try chawlas2 JLT branch with some of the amazing fellow bloggers. Over there I got to know that chawlas started way back in 1960 in ludhiana(India) with just cream chicken and than bit by bit they started many branches and now they are not only operating in India but flourishing in many other countries too.
Our culinary journey started with the traditional staple Punjabi drink one and only Lassi. That yogurt concoction was creamy and thick, perfect to kindle our taste buds for Punjabi food.
Starters list starts with Papad served along with mint and tamarind chutney,Chicken Lasooni Tikka,Fish Irani,Haryali Paneer,Chicken Malai Tikka,Tandoori Aloo, Tandoori Mushroom,Peshwari Tikka
Chicken Lasooni Tikka, chicken pieces marinated in spice hung yogurt with the palpable taste of garlic, tender piece with mild spices was one of my favorite from the evening.Fish Irani,Persian inspired dish was fillet of fish marinated in a mixture of yogurt, cashew nut, ginger-garlic paste with flavor of green cardamon, skewered and grilled in a earthen oven.Chicken Malai Tikka this supreme dish which is made by marinating chicken with cheese, fresh cream and spices was flavorful and distinctive in taste. The fiery Peshawari Tikka was ready to ignite our palate with its spices and richness. In veg tandoori options we tried Haryali Paneer,Tandoori Aloo and Tandoori Mushroom. Among all the veg options Tandoori Aloo was a hit on my list, those baked potatoes doused with marinade mixture and baked in clay oven were simple bites of deliciousness.
In main course we were served Cream Chicken,Tomato Cream Paneer, Chicken Rara, Mutton Rogan Josh, Mushroom Taka Tak,Dal Makhani and Chana Masla.
The very famous cream chicken with which chawlas started its journey, was presented in two version one was plain cream chicken and other one was with the addition of tomatoes. I liked the tomato version. I was under the impression that it will be like makhni chicken but I was wrong, in consistency, yes!!! it was like makhni but the hint of saffron took it to another level and taste. It went well with Rumali Roti wrapped in foil to keep it fresh.
Other options in breads were Lachcha Paratha, Missi Roti and Butter naan.
Mushroom Taka Tak,Dal Makhani and Chana Masala, I would definitely recommend these lip-smacking delicacies from main course.
Lastly, we got our hands on their deliciously hot piping Gulab Jaman, traditional Kesar Kheer and Moong Dal Halwa. Soft, spongy traditional dumplings, drenched in sugar syrup satisfied my sweet craving by melting in my mouth and oozing out the sweetness.
Chawlas JLT is a simple longitudinal stretched out restaurant, showcasing Indian artefact at the corner with modern lightning setup. It may not look like a traditional punjabi dhaba style restaurant but the food speaks for its pedigree. Try out chawlas square for semi-spicy to spicy and rich traditional punjabi food.
